Bailey bridge, a tragedy waiting to happen?

Coquitlam's mayor  fears the bottle-neck created thanks to the aging Bailey bridge linking his city with New Westminster will result in a tragedy.

Richard Stewart says his biggest concern is somebody not being able to reach royal columbian hospital in time because of the traffic situation.

He says a huge bottle-neck's been created on Burnett because of the one-lane Bailey Bridge in the Braid street industrial park that can't take trucks anymore.

"There are times when it's 20 minutes of lineup in order to get into New Westminster and that puts people at risk."

Stewart himself was stuck in the bottle neck tuesday.

"It has been particularily frustrating today because north road is closed because of a serious car accident it happens often we're left now with only half of the existing lanes two lanes now between New Westminster and Coquitlam in both directions."

Stewart says at the very least a two-lane Bailey bridge should replace the current span but ideally he'd like to see a four-lane overpass.
