A sentencing hearing is underway for Karl Lilgert, with the Crown calling for the ferry navigator to spend six years in prison.

It's a dramatic fall from grace for Lilgert, who rose to second in command of the flagship vessel Queen of the North.

Today, he sits beside his lawyer in front of a B.C. Supreme Court judge, eyes fixed on the floor as the Crown describes him as a liar who has no remorse.

Crown counsel says Lilgert knew his duties and failed to carry them out the night the ferry went off course, hit Gil Island and sank more than seven years ago.

Defence is asking for two years less a day to be served in the community.

Two passengers, including Gerald Foisy, were killed.

A letter from Foisy's sister states, "Our hearts have been broken and will never repair."
