The BC Civil Liberties Association and several other organizations promoting the protection of internet privacy have signed a 'Washington Statement' calling on the European Union to increase data protection.

In the wake of revelations over the extent of the u.s. governments internet monitoring, the BCCLA is hoping the EU withstands American pressure as it looks to overhaul its data protection laws.

"Hoovering, harvesting and exploiting of the information that the privacy sector collects -- telecommunications companies, internet services companies, et cetera. We clearly need regulation."

BCCLA Policy Director Michael Vonn says with such an interconnected world, if the e-u drops its current standards, canadians will inevitably be affected.
