Thirty four former inmates are bringing the B.C. government and a corrections officer to court, claiming they were sexually abused behind bars -- mainly at a Burnaby-based institution.
In their civil claim, filed in B.C. Supreme Court, the men -- the vast majority former Oakalla inmates-- state that corrections officer Roderick David MacDougall sexually assaulted them in the 80s and 90s.
The men allege MacDougall forced them to perform sexual favours in exchange for promises such as preferential treatment, relocation or protection.
The former cons say the corrections officer never followed through with anything, but repeatedly raped and threatened them.
They want compensation as the court deems appropriate for what they describe as 'reckless disregard' for their 'well-being and emotional and psychological health.'
MacDougall has previously been convicted for indecent and sexual assault.
