A teacher at a Victoria high school has been ordered to brush up on his professionalism skills after he played hooky and helped some students pull off a prank.
According to B.C.’s Teacher Regulation Branch, Ryan Michael Hazleton lied to his employer about being off from work for three days at Mount Douglas Secondary School in June 2012.
He said he was both sick and having a family emergency, when he was actually down in Los Angeles watching the kings play the New Jersey Devils in the Stanley Cup finals.
Hazelton also helped some students pull off a grad prank while he was away by leaving his keys in his desk unlocked.
A student had asked him how to get into the school after hours to pull off the caper.
The Greater Victoria School District suspended him for five days without pay, and didn't pay him for the days he was in L.A.
The teacher regulation branch can hand out its own punishment.
It reprimanded him, and ordered him to attend a one-day workshop on professionalism and boundaries.
