The couple charged with planting bombs at the BC Legislature on Canada Day has appeared in court in Surrey.
John Nuttall entered carrying a copy of the Koran.
He was wearing uncombed, unkempt hair, a scraggly beard and a red, well-worn T-shirt.
Amanda Korody had on a green jumpsuit.
Lawyer Thomas Morino says Nuttall has been held at Surrey Pre-trial Centre, Korody in Maple Ridge – both in segregation.
"My understanding is that the correctional system has made that decision, for their own security, and so again, you can appreciate someone locked in a cell for 23 hours a day ... it's difficult."
Morino says both will appear again in BC Supreme Court in Vancouver tomorrow morning on a new indictment.
He says at that time, he'll ask for a couple of months to process all the investigation information.
Police allege the two assembled pressure cooker bombs with the intent to cause harm and death, but add the bombs were inert and posed no danger to the public.
The RCMP's exact involvement could come out in future court proceedings.
Nuttall and Korody's landlords and neighbours say the two converted to Islam.
The RCMP describe the pair as self-radicalized and their plot as al-Qaida inspired.
