RCMP say a family survived a possibly deadly situation on the Columbia River near Trail because they did all the right things.
Cpl. Dave Johnson says a couple and their three kids were canoeing down the river when they were caught in a whirlpool.
The canoe capsized, but Johnson says everyone made it to shore safely because they planned ahead.
“The key thing with this family (is) everyone had life jackets on, everyone was prepared for a situation like this, and were prepared and it was a good outcome in this situation.”
The kids range in age from 10 to 16.
Johnson is warning people to take caution if they head out on the river this time of year because the water is running quite high and creating a different situation than many people are used to.
