Crews, including Vancouver's hazmat team, continue to work to contain the tanker spill in Lemon Creek in BC's Central Kootenay region which has leaked tens of thousands of litres of jet fuel into the local water supply.

The Central Kootenay Regional District says the evacuation order area has been reduced in size.

That means residents who live farther away than 800 metres from rivers will not be required to leave and can go back if they want.

People who live within three kilometres from the water supply still aren't able to drink it.

The district says almost all of the tanker's 35,000 litre load spilled into Lemon Creek and downstream.

The company involved is trying to figure out how to get the tanker out of the water.

Highway 6 remains closed between Highway 31 and Highway 3, but the district says it hopes to re-open that stretch as quickly as possible.
