Starting in April the province is making changes so you will pay less for generic medication.
Health Minister Margaret McDiarmid days new drug price regulation will drop the cost of geric drugs from 25% of brand name drug price in 2013 to 20% in 2014.
McDiarmid uses the drug Lipitor as an example of the savings. "The current cost of the brand name today - for a month is $55 dollars. The generic version would cost $19 dollars a month today at the 35%. Starting next year it would be $14 dollars a month and then the following year $11 dollars a month."
McDiarmid says the two years after this change is implemented will result $110-million in savings for taxpayers.
