An annual report from the British Columbia vital statistics agency shows more babies were born in 2011 than the previous year.

The most common names for babies in 2011 were Liam and Emma.

Health minister Margaret MacDiarmid says she's not surprised B.C.’s birth rate is on the rise as more and more Canadians are proud to live in the province.

"British Columbians enjoy the longest life expectancy at 82 years of age," said MacDiarmid.

The report also shows cancer remains the leading cause of death in the province but HIV deaths are down.

In 2011 there were 55 HIV deaths - down from 295 in 1996.
