BC Public Health Officer Doctor Perry Kendall says his office is working with national and international authorities to keep an eye on an outbreak of avian flu in China that has infected 16 people so far and killed six.
Kendall says there's always a risk the flu could spread outside of China, but so far that hasn't happened, and there have been no report of person-to-person transmission.
"All of which are reassuring factors but we do need to keep monitoring this and that's exactly what we're doing."
Kendall says enhanced surveillance systems set up after the SARS outbreak and the 2009 H-1-N-1 pandemic are working well.
