The lawyer for William Whiteside says his client is sorry and ready to pay the price for shooting and killing a Surrey convenience store clerk on Christmas Day 2011.
Garry MacDonald says his client was sentenced to 16 years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter.
"He was saying he knows better than to bring a loaded rifle into a convenience store. There was another robbery of a store four days later to which he was sentenced to five years concurrent for an armed robbery where he handed his friend the rifle and said I am not touching that thing again."
Alok Gupta, 27, was killed after taking a shift so the store owner could have some family time.
