A new waste program introduced in Surrey last fall is saving thousands and reducing trash previously headed for the landfill.
Residents now separate kitchen waste into an organics bin that's collected every week with the trash and recycling bins picked up twice a month.
"Garbage, since we've had our new program, has gone down 43 per cent across the city, organics diversion to basically composting, and soon to be biofuel has gone up 81 per cent,” says engineering general manager Vincent Lalonde.
What's more, that biofuel will run the collection trucks soon.
The new system is also automated requiring only a driver so there's that saving as well.
