B.C.’s highest court has upheld the four-year sentence handed to a child molester, but we're no longer allowed to tell you his name.
The man, who can only be identified by his initials R.R.B., was ordered last summer to serve four years behind bars for sexually assaulting a child who was friends with his child.
That sentence, which was more than the two-to-three years sought by prosecutors, has been upheld, but the court has also imposed a publication ban on the offender's name, which has already been widely reported since when the charges were first laid.
The only protected name was that of the victim, who was nine years old when the abuse started at a sleepover at R.R.B.’s home.
The higher court has only now determined that identifying the offender might violate the child’s privacy.
