This weekend marks the fifth anniversary of the tragic death of four year old Alexa Middelaer.
Alexa was struck and killed by an impaired driver in Delta.
Laurel Middelaer is Alexa's mother. She says it is important to keep telling their story in hopes of getting stiffer penalties for impaired drivers.
But, she says years later, she is still trying to heal.
"At the end of the day for our family to truly heal, as a mother I am the one that has to heal, and so I am going to choose in the upcoming months to take more time for me and really seek out that professional intervention that I need to heal," Middelaer says.
Middelaer says although she has a heavy heart, they family chose to go to Toronto this weekend to celebrate their 13-year-old son's birthday.
