Fortis BC is unsure of when people evacuated from about 20 homes in Mission will get to return after a natural gas fire.
Spokesperson Michael Allison says a hydro wire fell on top of a stop sign.
"It energized the stop sign and an electrical current travelled through the ground, and made contact with a steel gas pipeline, the current punched through the gas pipeline igniting the fuel below the ground that travelled to the surface and resulted in a fire."
This happened in the area of Stave Lake Road and Parr Avenue Tuesday afternoon.
The road is closed from Cherry Avenue to Beth Avenue.
