A member of parliament says it will be a huge risk to be without the marine communications and traffic services centres in British Columbia.

Fin Donnelly says it does not make sense to put people's lives in danger just to save some money.

The feds are looking to close three MCTS centres in British Columbia by 2015 and put in a radio system instead.

But just last week, the Coast Guard deemed that radio system to be unreliable.

And Donnelly, the deputy critic for Fisheries and Oceans for the West Coast, is not hiding his concern.

"By consolidating to save a few dollars, I think it is important that we look at efficiencies, but not at the expense of people's lives."

Donnelly says what is needed is a review of the system by experts to decide what is the safest option for our waters.
