The fur could be flying at Vancouver Council next week.
Vision Vancouver Coun. Tim Stevenson will bring a motion to council that he says will be good news for renters who have pets.
He says various organizations, such as the Seniors Advisory Committee, the BC Apartment Owners and Managers Association and a renters roundtable will be asked to recommend ways to help more tenants keep or have pets in rental buildings, "Right now in B.C. if you rent and the owner says you can't have your pet, then you can't have a pet, and I've had many people over the years saying they want a pet but their landlord says no."
The mayor will support the motion.
Other groups are scratching their heads over this one. The Rental Housing Council says bottom line, landlords have the final say if pets stay or go.
Spokesperson Amy Spencer says the rules are laid out in the Residential Tenancy Act, "I was a little surprised by the city's motion because the province already investigated this in 2004 and had a public consultation about it. At that time, they did change the Residential Tenancy Act to encourage more landlords to accept pets while respecting the belief that landlords and homeowners should determine if tenants are allowed to have pets in their suites."
Spencer says since the issue has already been settled, and the city could be wasting its time.
