Coquitlam City asks Premier to help avoid by-elections

The City of Coquitlam has written to the Premier to see if they can avoid not one but two civic by-elections after two councillors became MLA's in May.

Mayor Richard Stewart says they would like the premier to roll back a date in the act requiring a civic by-election.

Stewart says by-election campaigns are costly and don't make much sense with municipal elections coming in the fall of next year.

"Staff estimate at this point that the difference in cost between leaving them vacant and having a by-election to fill them is about $310,000, and that is just to fill those seats for 11 months. We typically get about five-percent turn out at a by-election, which makes a lot of people question the results."

Councillor Linda Reid won in Port Moody-Coquitlam for the Liberals.

While Councillor Selina Robinson took Coquitlam-Maillardville for the ndp.

Stewart says council will decide one way or another on July 8th.
