Vancouver's Mayor says "some dramatic engineering" may be needed along Downtown Eastside streets to try and discourage jaywalking and cut down on the number of traffic fatalities.
Gregor Robertson says the city's already dropped the speed limit to 30 kilometers an hour along Hastings Street and there are crosswalk timers, but he says city engineering staff is now looking at further steps to try and tackle the jaywalking problem.
"The next level of changes is more expensive barriers and more dramatic engineering changes to the street so they will assess the results based on the first level we've done and our goal overall is to eliminate traffic fatalities in Vancouver."
Police Chief Jim Chu says the VPD's asked PIVOT and VANDU for ideas how to solve the jaywalking problem but he says neither group has been receptive to a meeting.
