Mayor: Replacing the Bailey Bridge won’t solve traffic problems

The Mayor of New Westminster says rebuilding an old bridge that links his city to Coquitlam is a shortsighted solution to the city's traffic problems.

Wayne Wright says Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart's idea to replace the aging Bailey Bridge with a larger one  ignores the bigger picture.

Wright  says with around 10 thousand vehicles crossing the bridge every day, simply re-building will not make a difference.

“All the studies show that it won't work. It will just back up. There are six different lanes of train traffic, there's an under-built road leading into the bridge, and there's no place for people to go once they get across. So it doesn't matter how big the bridge is."

Wright says it will take serious meetings between both cities to come up with a solution that will benefit everyone - not just people living in Coquitlam or New West.
