There was no mention of banning longboarding at a community meeting in West Vancouver Wednesday evening. Instead, the community embraced the sport.
Garry Reimer the father of a longboarder says safe longboarding requires education, "It is experience education. It is from other boarders who are more experienced and actually know the dangers."
Longboarder, Chase, thinks safety courses are an option, "Perhaps something like that regarding downhill skateboarding can be offered to students that want to participate in that."
Blake says longboarding doesn't have to be done on the roads, "A series of interconnecting pathways on a sloped hill could offer that same amount of terrain and not actually inhibit anybodies access to their homes or roads."
Others suggested getting the Department of Motor Vehicles involved.
Meanwhile, a young longboarder remains in hospital.
a 17 year old collided with a van in West Vancouver at the end of May suffering serious injuries.
West Vancouver Police Constable Jeff Palmer says the youth's condition is slightly improved, "He remains in hospital for an indefinite period of time. There is some positive news, he has been moved from intensive care to the neurological critical care unit. But again, it's long term, uncertain prognosis, it was a very severe head injury."
Palmer says it underscores the message of safety as police remind longboarders the activity is banned in the District.
