Port Coquitlam residents are reporting a big spike in bear sightings.

Now the bylaw team is going to crack down on those who contribute to the problem.

Conservation officers recorded 98 bear sightings in June, up from 50 in May, and two of the animals were aggressive.

They're attracted to unsecured garbage cans and unpicked or fallen fruit.

The bylaw enforcement team is about to get busy in neighbourhoods with the most bear activity, including north of Lougheed Highway.

Garbage and food scraps are to be locked up tight in a properly secure enclosure, and must be set out at the proper time for pick-up.

Failure to do so can get you a $150 fine.
